The Mosin Nagant was designed by Mosin in response to the Russian army requirement for a magazine fed full power military rifle to match those of the other western powers. The first prototype was fielded in 1890 and full production started at the Izhevsk armaments plant the year after. The rifle was produced in several variations until just after the second world war. The rifle fires the 7.62 x 54 rimmed round and as such is capable of accurate fire beyond normal battlefield ranges. The Soviet army replaced the weapon with the new AK47 but still the rifle carried on for training and sniping use. There are thousands of surplus rifles and cheap military ammunition available on the sporting market, some of which have never fired a shot. The sniper variant is extremely accurate and comes with its own dedicated PU telescopic sight fitted, these fetch a handsome price around £375 in good condition whereas a cavalry carbine with good bore can be found for as little as £100.
